Justin Barker, The True Victim in the Jena 6 Case

More on Jena 6 @ BlackPerspective.net

This is the line we keep getting from the ‘status quo of racism’ defenders.

Sure, he’s the purist, most innocent kid that ever lived. He’s such a good kid he got expelled from school 5 months after the fight for brining a gun to school. Now he’s a high school dropout as I understand it.

Their should be some recompense for the butt kicking that was delivered to Mr. Barker, but some recompense does not = anything goes. The charges are way overblown! This is the issue here. The fact that the Jena 6 had to be disciplined is hardly in dispute by anyone. That doesn’t mean any discipline is okay. If somebody steals a piece of candy from the store, that doesn’t make chopping off their hand justified. If someone steals a car, they should be prosecuted, but it doesn’t mean they deserve 50 years in prison. The time should fit the crime. It is also a crime to try to kill an ant with a sledgehammer, metaphorically speaking.

Further, ignoring all the context of the incident, and accepting one sided stories that don’t make sense and don’t fit the facts, is egregious. Reed Walters has presented to date, NO evidence of a conspiracy versus a spontaneous reaction to a verbal racial assault; that was in continuation of at least months of racial intimidation. Such context changes everything. If he has no evidence of conspiracy, why did he charge it in the first place; save he was out to get those kids to put the blacks in their place?

Justin Barker is a punk, a thug, and a race baiter. He instigated and attempted to racially intimidate, and then wants to act as if he had no role in anything.

How can one accept the notion, that Justin Barker neither said nor did a thing to provoke the attack; particularly in contradiction to the black students who say he was with at least one of the noose hangers at the time, taunting with racial slurs the black student who had been beaten by whites at a party.

WHICH MAKES MORE SENSE? Only one story makes ANY sense. If you believe Justin Barker, and the noose hanger that was with him and testified as a witness in court; then Black savages, for no reason whatsoever, plotted to randomly pick a white guy to beat down just for the hell of it; and Justin Barker was these savages unfortunate, innocent target.

First, if you believe they just randomly picked him to beat for no reason; then you believe in the long embedded racist stereotype of small brained marauding black Negroes, who only have the mental capacity for sex and violence.

There is more contexts that shapes this whole issue, and that shows Reed Walters had it out to get somebody Black, particularly the ones at the school interrupting the racial status quo.

When the principal of the school (the only person in Jen who’s done anything right in this situation) recommended the noose hangers be expelled, and the superintendent overruled him and slapped them on the wrist with a measly 3 days IN-SCHOOL suspension; the Black kids protested. Not an organized, formal protest mind you, but simply raised their voices in dismay that the noose hangers where getting off so light for such a deep insult and threat of bodily harm. Because of this, Reed Walters came up to the school, held an assembly, and told the Black kids if they didn’t stop their protest and basically get back in their place, “that he would end their lives with the stroke of a pen”. This shows a clear predisposition on his part – stay in your place nigger or I’m gonna get’ch ya – that was the clear message.

Then, in order to make his aggravated battery charge, once the fight did happen, he had to have aggravating circumstances; such as a deadly weapon. He calls a tennis shoe a deadly weapon. If a tennis shoe is a deadly weapon, then a stack of typing paper is a deadly weapon. This is absurd. It’s clearly and extreme overreach. I submit that it is an ‘I’m going get you anyway I can and make an example out of you’ reach.

This is against the backdrop of an ongoing history and tradition in this country of over charging and overly aggressively prosecuting black people when a white person is the victim (or in many times supposed victim) in racially charged settings.

This situation does not simply exist in a vacuumed.

A suspension and maybe a misdemeanor assault charge may have been appropriate; but 80 to 100 years for teens in a school fight who were provoked by constant racial intimidation, death threats, and beatings they took themselves? Even 15 to 22 years, as if there’s no culpability on the other side? For teenagers? Can YOU imagine living under a constant barrage of threats, abuse, and intimidation? Is it not human nature to react when the final straw hits. When the authorities (here, both school, police, and prosecutors) have shown they will not only not protect you, but that they are satisfied to maintain that status quo. When a white teen threatened black students with a shot gun, and they wrestled it away from him, the black students got charged with theft of a firearm, and the white teen didn’t get prosecuted. Is this not a clear message from the white authorities that we not only don’t care what happens to you; but if you sass a white person we’re going to get you?

People get beat up at school all the time for way less provocation (or just for bullying purposes) than what these kids endured. I’ve seen black students stomped before, and no one went to prison. People get beat up at school all the time for way less provocation (or just for bullying purposes) than what these kids endured. I’ve seen black students stomped before, and no one went to prison. It’s a lie that Barker was beat so bad that he almost died. People who almost die don’t go to social events the same night of such a severe beating; they’re too busy, in the hospital, trying not to die!

Where was the zeal and resilience that Reed Walters exhibits in going after the Jena 6, for prosecuting white kids during months of threats, intimidation, physical violence, and abuse? He scarcely went after anybody white for their barrage upon the black kids (one probation for a similar beating administered to a black kid, where a real weapon, a beer bottle across the head was used). He let an environment of intimidation and ridicules fester, and then went full throttle when the recipients of the hostility finally boiled over and exploded.

This is why there is a battered wife’s syndrome recognized in the courts, because it’s understandably human nature that if someone constantly abuses and berates you, that you can have a breaking point. This is why so many school systems in recent years have adopted no tolerance for bullying policies. But some people want to act like these factors don’t exist in this case. In their eyes, the case is as simple as six Black savages, for no reason whatsoever, out of the thin blue sky, beat a pure, innocent, all American white boy.

Oh by the way, some of the Jena 6 claim they weren’t even the ones in the fight (such as Bryant Purvis), and where not arrested on the spot; they weren’t arrested until the next day. I’ve not seen to date, any evidence from DA Walters proving Purvis, for one, was actually even involved. Forget all the above, it’s possible that some may be out right innocent. But you know something; Purvis was involved in leading the protest, though. You know, the protesting that lead to Reed Walters threat to end their lives with the stroke of his pen. Hmmm, how curious.

This week, I saw the piece aired on Dr. Phil regarding the Jena 6 case. I'm sorry, but I am offended! I am a white female who lives in the South and have all my life. I have many black friends and always respect EVERY person until they give me reason not to. I am a strong supporter of Equal Rights. I don't believe that any person should be wrongly punished! That's cruelty in and of itself! What I am offended by is the fact that everyone on this program was overlooking the main situation, people were being wrongly attacked and wrongly associated with the act that caused the whole problem. Justin Barker, from my understanding, did not play part in the hanging the nooses. Why, then, was he punished? If one of the black guys that were arrested were not participants of the attack on Mr. Barker, why, then, was he arrested? All of this is messed up! On both sides! Nothing is being handled correctly, it sounds like. But the one thing that offended me most, the attitude of one mother of the Jena 6. She was rude and very uncooperative. If her son was wrongly arrested, she has every right to be upset! BUT, her hatred and anger resolves absolutely NOTHING! Justin Barker's mother was also rightfully angry. Her son was beaten! Were any black boys beaten? YES! They were offended and they were wrongly associated with the attack on Mr. Barker, but they were BEATEN! People need to put the more serious offenses first, I heard that said on the show. I also heard that everyone should be punished according to their actual participation. The hanging of the nooses were wrong! BUT that did not result in someone having to go to the Emergancy Room. It rightfully angered other students, but it WAS NOT a physical attack on one of God's people. Which brings me to my most important comment. Heaven will not be divided between race or religion. God doesn't play favorites. God isn't racist. God is a loving god and He wants us to live in peace and harmony. WHERE IS THE PEACE? As I stated before, I am a great supporter of Equal Rights. No one should be wrongfully accused and everyone should receive the same punishment that, and this is the most overlooked part, FITS THEIR CRIME. If the tables were turned and the white boys that hang the nooses decided to jump on the black guy that was in silent protest and beat the crap out of him until his eyes were swollen shut, where would the parents of that child be? Doing the same thing that Mrs. Barker is doing! And you all know it! That's what parents do! We are supposed to support and care for our children. If God gave you a BMW, loaded to the max, put it under your Christmas Tree, would you just get in it and move it to the side to just look at the twinkling lights on the tree? NO! So, why should Mrs. Barker be put on trial for supporting her child? HE WAS BEATEN! For heaven's sake, where's the logic? With this all being said, I know from experience, and I have alot of black friends that I care alot about and I know that they are geniune and loving people that loves God. But, there are some black people that, everytime things don't go their way, or they are punished, severely for their obvious crime, will find race to be the reason for their punishment. Somewhere in the whole situation, someone or something happened to make it all about race. Now, not all black people play that race card. Even some of the black people I know will tell you, blacks will bring race into every situation. Again, we are not judged by God, our ultimate Judge, by race. But, He will judge us for our actions towards His people. And we are all God's people. Get it? Do unto others = Equal Rights! People are being pushed to the side for the purpose of arguing race issues. The people who did wrong, in this situation, know what they did and they know why they did what they did. We may not know or understand it. They may not be punished accordingly. BUT God knows their hearts! If they are wrong, their actions will be accounted for. Maybe not in this lifetime, but eventually, they will. So, put all of the anger, hate, racism (both black and white) asside and enjoy life as it was given to you. And remember a racist can be white OR BLACK. Black people can often be racist toward white people. I have personally been a victim of this. Just because I am white, I have been excluded and descriminated against. Is it right? NO! But, is it national headlines? NO! So, stop using the spotlight of satan! Join God's army and support all human rights! AMEN? I don't normally put myself into these situation and I am sure I will receive alot of criticism. But, it's all welcome. If I am wrong, maybe your response will be a response from God to make that clear to me. BUT maybe my comments will be a witness to those families involved - ON BOTH SIDES!

I didn't see the Dr. Phil episode, nor have read transcripts or anything; so I can't speak to how that show went. Also it would be nice if you could tell us which mother of the Jena 6 you're talking about; being that none of them are siblings, so we're talking about 6 different mothers. I guess I can go look it up and find out, assuming there was only one on the show.

"Justin Barker, from my understanding, did not play part in the hanging the nooses. Why, then, was he punished? "

Did you read this post that you responded to? No one is claiming that he got beat as a direct response to the noose hanging. The DA is claiming he got beat for absolutely no reason whatsoever (i.e. the Black savages are just naturally violent and randomly picked him to beat just for kicks) He got beat for his actions of furthering the racial intimidation and humiliation by taunting kids who had been attacked by whites; while with one of the noose hangers might I add, who then testified against mychael bell.
The schools nor the law can allow people to attack each other with no response, but if you’re put in an environment of constant abuse, are just suppose to perpetually grin and bare it? Why is it always incumbent upon minorities in this country to just take it? The authorities weren't doing anything to help or protect them for months; as a matter of fact, they were participating in the intimidation and threats.

You're demand that people be superhuman in their emotional response is just unreasonable:

"If her son was wrongly arrested, she has every right to be upset! BUT, her hatred and anger resolves absolutely NOTHING! "

You're talking philosophy, this is real emotion. When someone tries to put your son in jail for life, practically bankrupts you to defend him, and threatens your life, see how happy go lucky you feel.

But I'll see if I can find video, and see what you’re talking about. I bet you're talking about Tina Jones, mother of Bryant Purvis, since he wasn't arrested until the next day.

Also to your issue of who went to the hospital versus who didn't. A death treat, which the nooses were, is not simply just wrong; IT'S CRIMINIAL, and no one was prosecuted for it.

Further, however wrong or criminal the Barker beating was, do you think that people should be over charged for crimes, or charged for what they actually did? That's the biggest issue here. If those boys were properly disciplined or charged instead of being hit with 80 years and ridiculous contentions that a tennis shoe is a deadly weapon, the world would have never known of this case, and we wouldn't be talking about it.

It's a fact, a demonstrate-able fact, by the numbers -scientifically - that Blacks are way overcharged and prosecuted for the same crimes committed by whites, especially when the victim is white! That's why black folks are so upset; and why hearing about 80 years for a school fight struck such a deep cord. We're sick of this shit!

They're trying to ruin some kids lives over a school fight, which happens every day. Punish them proportionally. Just because they did wrong, doesn't mean you get to do anything under the sun to them in response.

Anyway, your claim that you are descrimintated against for being white, incomparison to the discriminatory racial biased the Black minority has to face at the hands of the white majority in this country; particularly in the injustice systems; shows where you stand. You don't care about equality, you want to pretend it's not real; and thus such a position frames how you see these issues.

People who keep calling this a fight are very ignorant. 1 on 1 maybe 1 on 2 is a fight 6-1 is a beating, no way around that if you feel it's only a fight watch boxing or UFC those are fights 6 on 1 a beating. Second off they were convicted by an all white jury because the black jurors summoned never showed up for duty. Third the majority of the school is black and people say they couldn't deal with the scrutiny every day. What are you talking about in a majority black school I bet the white kids have it twice as bad. It always has to be the race card, when's that gonna finally die. I have a friend I went to High School with who had a lower GPA and a lower score on the ACT and he got into a college that turned me down because he was black and im white, how is that fair? If it was six white kids and one black kid their would probably be protest for the white kids to get the death penalty. It's ridiculous and in my life I have never been racist but I have had many people be racist to me and now days I think Black people are way more racist towards white people and if hanging the noose(which is not right, I agree there should be punishment) is a hate crime why isn't 6 black kids beating a white kid a hate crime.

To add more to my previous, and in response to the post before. YES a shoe can be a deadly weapon and so can a fist. If you kick somebody hard enough or enough times they CAN die, that's not an old wise tale. It depends a lot on who's doing the kicking and punching yes, but 6 athletic kids beating one unconscious kid, had it not been stopped could have resulted in death, what world do people live in that they don't believe someone could die from being kicked in the head. In another response if you do the crime you go to jail, if black people commit more crimes than white as a population yes their will be more black people in jail, pretty simple equation. I have a friend who had a battery charge on his record, he got into a fight against two kids and had his skull fractured in the fight while the other two were in much better shape and he sat an entire year in jail because of his prior record and guess what he's white, had he been black I suppose you would have protested for him too.

I just read some previous posts and people are talking about months and years of abuse by these white students, am I wrong that this is a majority black school, are you saying these black kids didn't make racial remarks at any of the white kids either, they just put their head down and took abuse while these white devil's cut them apart. Grow up people if I had a dollar for every time I was called cracker or he's just a white boy i'd be rich and through all of that I have never made racial remarks to anyone. I admit Justin Barker is probably not an innocent little angel and he might have antagonized it, but if you honestly think these other kids just couldn't take the constant abuse anymore and finally snapped to have to beat down a white kid 6 on 1 then your flat out DUMB, really DUMB!!

Does the sworn testimony of the "Jena 6" not count with you? They stated unequivocally that Justin had done nothing to provoke the attack.

So now the question is whether you will back up and admit that your over the top descriptions of Justin and the DA were incorrect?

You called each of them some nasty names and assigned some vile motivations to them, yet it turns out you were completely wrong.
